Hope for Haiti Now Telethon

Hope for Haiti Now Telethon

I think the majority of us have been guilty of taking what we have for granted atleast once (or one hundred times). With the recent earthquake in Haiti, there’s so much unrest in the country that people are struggling to survive. We’re lucky. We wake up in the morning, grab breakfast, go online, shower in clean water, easily get to work or school or the beach or the mall or Starbucks. Then, we come home, hang out and go to sleep in our comfortable beds, bundled most likely. While we go through our days as normal, there are hundreds of thousands of people displaced, injured, and helpless. Organizations like the Red Cross are dedicating alot of resources and I think it’s our responsibility to do what we can.

Set to begin tonight at 8pm E.T., Hope for Haiti Now is a telethon hosted on several channels, just flick through and you’re likely to land on it. Segments will be hosted across the country with George Clooney hosting in LA, Wyclef Jean in NY, while Anderson Cooper will be reporting live from Haiti. Alot of people are behind this effort and be sure to look for appearances by former President Bill Clinton, Muhammad Ali, Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Will Smith, Robert Pattison, Matt Damon, Tom Hanks and Nicole Kidman. Beyond that, taking the stage to perform will be Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé, Madonna, U2′s Bono and The Edge, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, Keith Urban, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen.

100 percent of the funds to go specifically to immediate humanitarian relief and long-term recovery efforts in Haiti conducted by the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, the American Red Cross, UNICEF, Yele Haiti, Oxfam America, Partners in Health and the UN World Food Program.

“It’s a big world out there, and we all have a lot of responsibility to help out people who can’t help themselves.”

- George Clooney

A Word from the Editor

A Word from the Editor

Normally, I try to refrain from inserting any personal tidbits here but we’ve just hit 2,000 posts and I wouldn’t get much sleep if I didn’t take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support. I started Por Homme in mid-2008 with very little direction and now 2,000 posts later, I’m proud to say we’re really pleased with the stories we’ve covered and the feedback we’ve gotten. I think the site’s really come of age, with content all of our readers can enjoy from a point of view that’s as knowledgeable as it is appealing.

We’ve got a lot going on in 2010. We’re hoping to do a bit more traveling, so we can get some in depth reporting on some of the most sought-after labels and pieces this side of the pond. Also, we’ve enjoyed covering some new labels and retailers that have hit the scene and we encourage everyone to reach out to us so that more labels can get the recognition they deserve.

Also, I just want to thank our advertisers for their support and backing as well as our hosting company, Media Temple. From the moment I launched this site ’til now, their support team has been nothing short of flawless. We’ve had content management, uploading, and plenty of other issues and their team has always found the solution. The fact that they’re support line is open 24/7 also helps and gives us a piece of mind other companies just flat out can’t.

Just a few days ago, we dug into the design of the site to give it some much-welcomed life and I hope you’re all pleased. I wanted to make sure we didn’t take away from the familiarity you all have to the navigation, so the skeleton’s remained the same, just a few aesthetic changes were made here and there. Hope all the upgrades we’ve made are well-received.

Interact with us, whether it’s through Twitter, Facebook or email, I’d personally love to hear from you, because I don’t think we could’ve made it this far without the support and feedback of our readers. Thank you once again for reading and I hope to hear from all of you in the future. Stick around.

“Advice: do whatever it takes to become timeless. With that in mind, inform, educate, inspire, and most importantly initiate passion.”

Handcut New York City Map by Karen O’Leary [Design + NYC]

Handcut New York City Map by Karen O’Leary [Design + NYC]

Design Milk turns us to this piece of art by architectural designer Karen O’Leary. She stripped the familiar map image of New York City of all the unnecessary such as symbols, words, and colors. “She cut the lines by hand to show the city in a simplified and intriguing light. New York natives who observe this piece would probably enjoy identifying streets, destinations, and neighborhoods.” We’re doing that as we speak; where’s Mamoun’s?

David Bailey On Warhol to be Reissued on DVD by Network

David Bailey on Warhol to be Reissued on DVD by Network

Here’s a DVD that’s worth picking up when it drops next month, the reissuing of David Bailey on Warhol. In the early 1970s, David Bailey broadened his horizons away from photography by making high-profile documentaries for ATV. His reputation allowed him unprecedented access to Andy Warhol and his followers, exploring his art work and film works, throwing in candid discussions revolving around sexuality, Warhol’s life at The Factory and his experience of being shot. It was initially banned for being ‘offensive’, a ban that was overturned soon after.

Also here as ‘extras’ are two further David Bailey documentaries, one on photographer Cecil Beaton and the other on Italian film director Luchino Visconti, along with a booklet containing the full transcripts (including deleted scenes) for Warhol.

The Obsession: Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester

The Obsession: Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester

Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl, that show on CW that all the girls are dangerously obsessed with, is one rare beauty. We weren’t familiar with her before GQ gave her some headlines, but we really wish we were. The 23-year old plays the decadent heiress Blair Waldorf in the show, but not that you care about that. She’s got the hots for Ray Liotta all because of Goodfellas, which kicks her sexy level up a few notches, as that movie should be in every man’s list of all-time classics.
