T-Mobile removes original 1GB data cap

Originally when T-Mobile unveiled the G1, the small print talked of a 1GB cap of data usage. The info was put on front page and now T-Mobile’s retracted the data cap and has chosen a more user-friendly approach. Check the letter below:

“Our goal, when the T-Mobile G1 becomes available in October, is to provide affordable, high-speed data service allowing customers to experience the full data capabilities of the device and our 3G network. At the same time, we have a responsibility to provide the best network experience for all of our customers so we reserve the right to temporarily reduce data throughput for a small fraction of our customers who have excessive or disproportionate usage that interferes with our network performance or our ability to provide quality service to all of our customers.

We removed the 1GB soft limit from our policy statement, and we are confident that T-Mobile G1 customers will enjoy the high speed of data access over our 3G network. The specific terms for our new data plans are still being reviewed and once they are final we will be certain to share this broadly with current customers and potential new customers.”

T-Mobile’s G1 Android phone priced and set for release in October

At today’s G1 Press Conference in NYC, T-Mobile announced that the Android-based phone will launch on October 22nd for $179 with a 2-year contract.  UK will get a chance to grab the phone in early November and other Euro countries like Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and the Netherlands are expected to get the G1 in early first quarter of 2009.

The G1 features WiFi and 3G radios, a 3-megapixel camera, and support for the Android Market and Amazon’s mobile MP3 store, giving owners apps and tunes on the go. Already with T-mobile? Then you’re in luck because you get to pre-order the G1 today.

Check out more images of the phone HERE.

First image and specs of T-Mobile’s G1 Android phone leaked

The above picture is the first stock photo of the G1, Google’s Android phone that’s set to be unveiled in the morning (10:30 a.m. ET).  We’re guessing some guy over a T-Mobile couldn’t hold it in for another 12 hours. We’ve got more images below, so be sure to scroll through.

The specs of the phone have also been leaked. The dimensions are 4.6 x 2.16 x 0.63 inches and it weighs 5.6 ounces, features a 480 x 320 HVGA display, is 3G-ready and has GPS.  The G1 also has a 3.1-megapixel camera and supports up to 8GB of memory.  It’s reported that it will hold 5 hours of talktime and 130 hours of standby.

What’s more interesting about the phone is that it won’t be doing video capture, won’t have stereo Bluetooth, and will require a Gmail account.  Also, the phone’s not going to be sold outside a 2-5 mile radius of T-Mobile’s 3G coverage areas.

Seems a bit odd, but we’ll get official news in the morning, so be sure to tune in!

Android-packed Google phone to be unveiled next week by T-mobile

We thought this day would never come.  T-Mobile’s given an official date on when they’ll be showing off the highly-anticipated Google Phone.  T-Mobile USA is set to unveil it alongside Google next Tuesday at a news conference in New York.

The G1 phone, which is being manufactured by HTC, doesn’t hit stores until October, but T-Mobile’s ready to let loose about the Android-packed gadget.  We might even hear about the price (crosses fingers).  T-Mobile’s the first carrier to market the phone and expect others to follow suit.

They haven’t gotten as much exposure as they’d hoped but when you’re competing with Apple’s iPhone and RIM’s Blackberry line, it’s a cold world out there.

Google’s not worried, though.  They want their services on all cell phones, including their ad services.  Of course Google’s already created the software to do that.  We’ve heard about the Android app store that will rival that of the iPhone.  Rumors are though that it won’t have Microsoft Exchange Server, which will make things a little tough for Google, if they want to enter the cell phone market with a full head of steam.

Google showed off the handset at a developer conference in London on Tuesday.  Next week, Google and T-Mobile should start to reveal whether Android will live up to the hype.

Android 0.9, roadmap released by Google

Yes! This is the information that every iPhone hater’s been waiting for.  Yesterday, Google released the 0.9 beta version of Android to developers.  This version is said to have close-resemblance to the real deal non-beta version coming in the next few months.  November seems to be the month of interest right now, but the first GPhone may not come with Exchange.

Android is for the masses, iPhone for the rich?

Recently, Last100 got a chance to interview Nicolas Gramlich, founder of an online community for android developers, anddev.org.  Android is Google’s mobile operating system and competes with the likes of Apple’s OSX for iPhone and Nokia’s Symbian open source OS. Gramlich said that “there will be a great variety of Android devices all over the world, where there will always be just the iPhone.”
