Google Maps for iOS

Google Maps for iOS

Three months after iOS 6 hit the market with a brand new Maps application, an official Google Maps app is now available in the App Store. With this comes a welcomed competitor to the native Maps app as well as a pretty clean aesthetic that matches that of other Google iOS apps. What did we miss the most, you ask? Well, public transportation directions was a huge gap and Google’s filling it quite nicely with this one. We’ll have to see how it performs in NYC. Also, Google Maps for iOS comes with a beta version of Google Maps Navigation, which has voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation, and live traffic conditions as well. Signing in with your Google account also lets you sync searches, directions and favorites. Google Maps also has Street View for anyone that missed that.

The new Google Maps app is available for the iPhone and iPod Touch (4th gen) iOS 5.1 and higher, in more than 40 countries and 29 languages, including Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

Introducing: Facebook Places [Foursquare]

Introducing: Facebook Places [Foursquare]

Not sure how many of you folks out there use location-based services like Foursquare but we have read through various sources that such applications are gaining some traction as of late. It’s no surprise, really. You take a person, tell him to check in to a place and give him tokens and prizes to make him feel like he’s a part of something. Heck, if he keeps visiting a place often enough, you might even make him the mayor of the spot and the owners of the venue might give him twenty percent off his next visit. Well, Facebook is taking a similar twist and making it widely available for all its mobile users. Facebook Places is Foursquare without all the extras. We can never keep track of all our friends at all times, but this service will allow us to connect in a whole new way.

Facebook Places will also help users consolidate the amount of social media apps they use. I mean, who wants to build hundreds of friends on Facebook, only to repeat the cycle when another social media service is offered. I did it for FB and Twitter but I’ll be damned if I continue down this road. Well, I’ll conclude my rant now, but head over to Facebook for full details on the service and how you can get started.

Buy anything you take a picture of via Amazon’s iPhone app

Let’s forget that the economy is about to collapse and people are running short on disposable income. Amazon doesn’t seem to care as they’ve just released an iPhone app that will help us to buy more useless crap.

When you upload a photo, Amazon’s Mechanical Turk workers try to match the photo up to products on sale on Amazon.com. You will get results back in 5 minutes to 24 hours, and you’re susceptible to human error. It should be interesting trying to buy one HDTV and getting the link for another. Good luck, people.

Google Mobile for iPhone now available at App Store

Google’s iPhone Search app is live, so head to iTunes and grab it from the App Store.  The guys over at Gizmodo have already tested it out and given some screen shots.

“Gizmodo” was understood, surprisingly, as was “bear market” and “bare ass”. That’s right, it was smart enough to tell the difference between the words bear and bare, depending on the context. Also super cool?

Grab the app HERE.

Numberkey brings Numberpad back to your laptop via iPhone

For people on the go, a notebook (obviously) is the best way to go.  For people on the go, a 17″ display that gives you a numberpad is not the way to go.  I travel with an 11″ display and when I’m punching numbers, I’m left without a numberpad for ease of use.

For Mac users, this dilemma is gone with the help of a new iPhone app called numberkey.  Perfect for heavy duty spreadsheet users, this nifty new application for the iPhone and iPod Touch lets you use your mobile device as an ad-hoc numeric keypad for your Mac. Just install Balmuda’s Numberkey connect software onto your Mac, then grab the mobile app from the App Store for $1.99. The two pieces of software communicate via Wi-Fi, adding a familiar 18-key numeric keyboard to your Mac without wires. Not bad, right?

NBC kicks Silverlight to the curb, looks to Flash for online media viewer

The Olympics were great if you were just looking to watch your essential primetime events.  But for some of us, it was a bit frustrating.  Having to head over to NBC’s Olympic site to watch some non-broadcasting events was a pain, because it required you to download Microsoft’s Silverlight first.  Then, after numerous tries, it would finally begin.  The interface itself was not that appealing.  We were watching Phelps on our flat screens and not our PC monitors.  But, some people were.

Now, NBC has abandoned the application, for unknown reasons and is going to go with a more user-friendly approach.  It’s been announced that NBC will stream its NFL football games this season using Flash video.

This is the first time full-length NFL football games have been available in the US over the Internet.  The fun’s already begun, our friends.  The streaming service made its debut on Thursday during the NFL season opener between the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins. Besides the video feed, the streaming service also offers the ability to switch camera angles, view picture-in-picture playback, receive live statistics and interact with commentators in real time.

Check out the service and let us know what you think!
