On October 23rd 2012, in an abandoned building in downtown New York over a thousand people gathered to celebrate the most interesting and exciting design collaboration so far. I was one of them and got to witness the launch of the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M collection and have to say the detail put into the presentation was nothing short of exceptional. The unique event was held across many floors of 5 Beekman Street, a historical building in the city’s financial district. Guests were able to discover the collection in dance performances by noted choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and through specially commissioned art installations, before DJ’s kept the party going into the early hours. Celebrities at the event included Kanye West, Alan Cumming, Helena Christensen, Margareta van den Bosch, Julianne Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker, Selma Blair, Doutzen Kroes and many others.
The Maison Martin Margiela with H&M collection will be available in selected stores and online on November 15th.

Fashion’s Night Out 2012 is here and it’s bigger than ever, folks. We’re talking hundreds of in-store experiences happening throughout New York City. We’ve tried our best to narrow down the list and focus on the most entertaining. Some of the bigger luxury brands are staying low key this time around but the party will literally be at their door step so they won’t be able to hide from the madness, especially in midtown. Note to the claustrophobics: Stay indoors tomorrow night. Seriously. Check out our list below.

Now through Saturday, Audemars Piguet will be running an exhibition marking the 40th anniversary of their historic Royal Oak. The Park Avenue armory houses 100 timepieces, many of which have never been unveiled to the public. Expert some amazing modern art to be showcased at the exhibit as well. Dan Holdsworth’s photopraphy of the Vallée de Joux, where Audemars Piguet is based will be on display, alongside artist Davide Quayola’s installations experimenting with photography, geometry, sculpture and audiovisuals; and Sebastian Leon Agneessens’s multi-channel sound installation. Hodinkee shot a pretty solid video of the exhibition pre-launch so there’s a lot to check out in terms of how the space transformed into what you will see if you get a chance to stop in.

Last week, I had the opportunity to join my good friends from Hodinkee, Gear Patrol, Forbes and a few other publications as well as a small group of Hodinkee loyalists for a dinner hosted by ‘dinkee and Stephen Hallock of MB&F. On display were ten horological machines from MB&F and were available to touch, feel and try on. We are now in a very small group of individuals that have been given such an opportunity to see these rare pieces in person, let alone ten of them at once. Much thanks to Ben Clymer at Hodinkee and the fine folks at MB&F for making this happen, it was truly an honor.
Mr. Yang of Gear Patrol went to work with his Fuji X100 and took some amazing shots, some of which we’ve highlighted below for your viewing. Enjoy!

Last week, HODINKEE and Audemars Piguet hosted an event at the Swiss watchmaker’s New York City boutique on 57th. On display were some of the brand’s finest timepieces, including those unveiled at this year’s SIHH in Geneva just two months ago. The Millenary Minute Repeater in Titanium, which we covered here, was on hand as were several of the brand’s grand complication pieces. It’s not a HODINKEE party without vintage pieces, folks and there were some gems pulls right from the AP museum in Le Brassus, Switzerland.

Last week, we had the opportunity to attend the Spring 2011 preview event for Levi’s. It was held at the Levi’s Photo Workshop on Wooster St., which explains why it was closed to the public for about a week. The collection looks great, with plenty of great additions to the denim lineup as well as a handful of essential, lightweight gear to get you through the spring.
The event was topped off by a musical performance by British rockers, The Duke Spirit, who played a powerful and energetic set for the night’s invited guests. A force unto themselves, led by the take-no-prisoners smolder of singer Liela Moss, The Duke Spirit are a band that hypnotizes with dirty blues, sexy, soulful rock ‘n’ roll + blazing musicianship. They created a perfect atmosphere for the blue-jean-inventing brand’s ‘rough-around-the-edges’ Spring assortment.

Last night, we had the opportunity to stop in at New York’s finest shoe shop, Leffot, and see the Wolverine 1000 Mile 721 LTD boot in the flesh. I also got the chance to speak with some of the folks behind Wolverine and when I say they know what they’re doing, I mean it. They pulled out some inspiration from their archives and delivered a timeless boot in the 721 LTD. The Horween color 8-shell cordovan leather is really something else.
The shaft and tongue are unlined shell, which is great because it’s softer and suppler around the ankle and instep. They’re surprisingly lightweight and flexible and offer great support under your feet. As with all cordovan boots the more you wear them the better they look.
Wolverine is only making 1,000 pairs of these and each are hand numbered and includes Basswood shoetrees and a certificate of authenticity.
