Introducing | Facebook Home

Facebook Home

Facebook has opted out of designing a new phone and instead worked with the Google Android platform to create a new overlay that replaces your app icons with social info. The lockscreen’s replaced with Cover Feed and prioritizes updates from people instead of apps, whilst using an algorithm to determine the updates that are most important to you. Need access to your apps? Just swipe notifications off screen to dismiss them while using a long press can remove all notifications in one go. Full-screen images really give Home an engaging palette, with the end result being a blend between Android and iPhone social networking app Path. Plain text status updates are placed over a user’s cover photo, to keep the appearance consistent with photo-centric posts.

Chat Heads is Facebook’s new messaging app that’s featured in Home. It allows you to quickly and easily communicate with your friends without leaving the app yo’re in. Circular icons are featured on the right-hand side, with the ability to drag them to anywhere you like on the screen. Tap them and you open a pop-over chat dialog that combines IMs and text messages into a universal interface.

By way of his status update, Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Facebook now has over 1 billion active monthly users. At the same time, the social network has released their first ad, one that aligns Facebook with other things that people use to get together and connect. Here’s what Mark said on his status:

This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month.
If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you.

Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.

I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.

Facebook Files IPO

Facebook Files IPO at $5 Billion, S-1 in with SEC

Eight years after starting in a Harvard dorm room, Facebook has filed for its initial public offering. The company’s seeking to raise $5 billion in hopes of becoming one of the largest tech IPOs we’ve ever had the opportunity to witness. Investment bank Morgan Stanley will act as lead underwriter, with Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan and others to take secondary positions. There are some raw figures from the filing that are worth noting — 845 billion monthly active users that dish out 2.7 billion Likes and Comments per day. Beyond that, the company made $3.71 billion in 2011, mostly from advertising. Ad revenue rose dramatically from $764 million in 2009 to $3.154 billion in 2011.

Mark Zuckerberg must be proud but we’re certain his work isn’t done just yet and neither is Facebook’s. The man behind the social network has done some interesting things over the years but seems like all the hard work’s finally paid off. Details are trickling out but below we’ve got the visuals from the SEC filing, though if you want to see the several-hundred page document you can see that for yourself here. Shares are expected to be begin trading in May.

Introducing: Facebook Places [Foursquare]

Introducing: Facebook Places [Foursquare]

Not sure how many of you folks out there use location-based services like Foursquare but we have read through various sources that such applications are gaining some traction as of late. It’s no surprise, really. You take a person, tell him to check in to a place and give him tokens and prizes to make him feel like he’s a part of something. Heck, if he keeps visiting a place often enough, you might even make him the mayor of the spot and the owners of the venue might give him twenty percent off his next visit. Well, Facebook is taking a similar twist and making it widely available for all its mobile users. Facebook Places is Foursquare without all the extras. We can never keep track of all our friends at all times, but this service will allow us to connect in a whole new way.

Facebook Places will also help users consolidate the amount of social media apps they use. I mean, who wants to build hundreds of friends on Facebook, only to repeat the cycle when another social media service is offered. I did it for FB and Twitter but I’ll be damned if I continue down this road. Well, I’ll conclude my rant now, but head over to Facebook for full details on the service and how you can get started.
