G.R.P. Knitwear Factory Tour Carmignano - Florence, Italy

For those not in the loop, Jamie of The Standard Edition has been on a European tour for the ages. He’s taken a liking to Italy particularly and understandably so. There’s a lot to take in from beautiful architecture, well-dressed people, and the abundance of textile factories tucked away in the villages of Florence and other surrounding cities. Among them is that of G.R.P. Knitwear, a Florence-based maker of fine knits and other men’s offerings. They first opened doors back in 1973 as a source for other companies but quickly established their own name in a few years time. G.R.P. Knitwear is like an unsung hero of sorts as they’ve made pieces for more notable labels like Engineered Garments, Beams, Svenson, and many others. A small crew from Por Vocacao took a recent trip to Tuscany, Italy, home of shoe manufacturer Buttero. This video which covers their trip and gives us a look at the inner workings of Buttero, sheds light on a family-owned and operated company that’s extremely close in relation and one that’s filled with people that share the same passion for making quality product. “We learned about their ways, their craftsmanship, Tuscany’s unique leather making background and truly understood what sets Buttero apart from other shoe brands in the market.” The Sani family, owners and founders of Buttero, are true representatives of this Italian and their genuine love for the trade shows in this video. The New Assembly Line | Ferrari Factory Tour in Maranello, Italy

Here’s an inside look at Ferrari‘s factory in Maranello, Italy. Design Boom went in to the factory and got to check out the carmaker’s latest addition to the plant — the ‘new assembly line’ — which focuses mainly on the final stages of the car-building process. Ferrari’s shop is a perfect blend of technology and design, as it utilizes 21,000 sq. meters of space in the most efficient manner possible. Across the two floors is a test area, prototype development facility as well as offices and meeting rooms. The space was designed by Jean Nouvel himself and really turned out tremendously.

The folks at Selectism recently had the opportunity to take a tour of Bentley’s factory in Crewe, England. In the first part of their coverage, they went inside Bentley Motors’ “Wood Shop”. They profiled how the interior wood paneling inside all Bentley Motor vehicles is produced through a complicated process of materials sourcing and hand crafted design. Isaia Napoli Factory for ACL Made in Italy Tour

MW drops the third installment in ACL’s Made in Italy Tour, this time giving us a look inside the workspace of Isaia located on the outskirts of Napoli. Isaia is a family-run business as it was founded in 1957 by Enrico Isaia and is now helmed by the designer’s grandson Gianluca Isaia. The majority of folks that work in production are second or third generation tailors, with the craft being in their blood. As for the factory, it’s a two-story building that’s “tucked away in an unmarked alley with a large gate.”

The folks over at NOWNESS recently took a trip over to the Northhampton workshop of British shoemaker John Lobb as they are in the midst of celebrating their 150th anniversary. The brand’s client list is infamous to say the least as they’ve got everyone from Frank Sinatra to Prince Charles under their belt. The process of making a John Lobb shoe involved over 190 steps and the shots below give us a look at some of the procedure.

Red Wing Shoes | S.B. Foot Tannery Video

The second film from Red Wing ShoesVideo Series sheds light on the Minnesota-based company’s tannery — S.B. Foot Tanning Company. The tannery opened in 1872, but was purchased by Red Wing Shoe Company in 1986 in order to maintain control over the quality of the leather used in the company’s footwear. S.B. Foot Tanning is actually one of the few leather manufacturers in the US still using wooden drums, which helps control the temperature changes that occur during the tanning process.
