Three months after iOS 6 hit the market with a brand new Maps application, an official Google Maps app is now available in the App Store. With this comes a welcomed competitor to the native Maps app as well as a pretty clean aesthetic that matches that of other Google iOS apps. What did we miss the most, you ask? Well, public transportation directions was a huge gap and Google’s filling it quite nicely with this one. We’ll have to see how it performs in NYC. Also, Google Maps for iOS comes with a beta version of Google Maps Navigation, which has voice-guided, turn-by-turn navigation, and live traffic conditions as well. Signing in with your Google account also lets you sync searches, directions and favorites. Google Maps also has Street View for anyone that missed that.
The new Google Maps app is available for the iPhone and iPod Touch (4th gen) iOS 5.1 and higher, in more than 40 countries and 29 languages, including Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish.

![Introducing: Facebook Places [Foursquare] Introducing: Facebook Places [Foursquare]](http://www.porhomme.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/facebook-places-hq-foursquare-location-based.jpg)
Not sure how many of you folks out there use location-based services like Foursquare but we have read through various sources that such applications are gaining some traction as of late. It’s no surprise, really. You take a person, tell him to check in to a place and give him tokens and prizes to make him feel like he’s a part of something. Heck, if he keeps visiting a place often enough, you might even make him the mayor of the spot and the owners of the venue might give him twenty percent off his next visit. Well, Facebook is taking a similar twist and making it widely available for all its mobile users. Facebook Places is Foursquare without all the extras. We can never keep track of all our friends at all times, but this service will allow us to connect in a whole new way.
Facebook Places will also help users consolidate the amount of social media apps they use. I mean, who wants to build hundreds of friends on Facebook, only to repeat the cycle when another social media service is offered. I did it for FB and Twitter but I’ll be damned if I continue down this road. Well, I’ll conclude my rant now, but head over to Facebook for full details on the service and how you can get started.

Gilt Groupe, our favorite sample sale website recently launched an iPhone app. I haven’t gotten the chance to give it a run during the peak hour of 12pm but the interface leads me to believe it’s a solid offering. Six taps is all it takes to get from the shop to a completed purchase, making things much more accessible and efficient. Now, you won’t have to hide the web browser at work. Instead, you can just fire this app up and shop from the palm of your hand.

With a new mobile interface recently released, it seems that Yahoo’s not slowing down their expansion just yet. They’ve released three new apps for the iPhone, including one that’s been longer overdue. The iPhone’s been aggressively fighting for the number one spot on Flickr’s list of most popular cameras, but Yahoo’s release of the native app for the platform should open the gates a little.
Users can snap, upload, tag and package location data to a photo. There’s also a list of previously added photos, friends pictures and the ability to search the site’s library of user-generated content. The LA Times also tells us, “iPhone 3GS owners also get the ability to shoot and upload video. Unlike the “send to YouTube” feature that came with iPhone OS 3.0, however, users must open the Flickr app separately from the video editor in order to get it onto the Yahoo-owned photo site.”
The other two apps, Fantasy Football and Finance, are both welcomed with open arms. With the NFL season just kicking off, this is definitely the best time to launch an app for a service in such high demand. As for Yahoo Finance, it’s like a beefed up version of the already native stocks app on the iPhone which also runs on Yahoo Finance.

Not much to say about this yet but Rockstar’s let the world know they’re bringing GTA to our beloved iPhones. Don’t think it’s going to be anything like Grand Theft Auto IV because they’ve also let us know the iPhone-version’s going to be a top-down affair, much like the original GTAs from the 90s. They say sequels are never as good as the original and we might see if this holds true when the Grand Theft Auto hits the App Store this fall. No screenshots yet, but worry not, we’re on the lookout for those as wells.

Two new versions (one free and one for $2.99) of the AIM iPhone app are live as we speak, finally bringing along push notifications. For anyone not aware, this means that now when the app is closed, it will display notifications showing you how many outstanding messags you have, while keeping you connected to the AIM service even when its not actively in use. Some people are also reporting Beejive IM, the one that’s $15.99 but much more versatile and refined, to be live as well (also boasting push notifications).
