Sir Paul McCartney spends £1.5 million on security guards for concert in Israel

40,000 fans are expected to watch Sir Paul McCartney perform at Tel Aviv park in Israel later today. He has a strong following, but many are opposing the event. Sir Paul’s gone on and spent roughly £1.5 million on police, officers from Britain’s  MI6 and Israeli agents as well.

The event’s to celebrate Israel’s 60th anniversary, but it’s facing Islamic opposition as well as opposition from extreme right-wing Jewish groups due to British “anti-Semetic elements.”

Sir Paul’s also hired three floors at the five star Dan Hotel for about £70,000. About twenty-one suites including the Royal Suite he’ll be staying with his lady Nancy Shevell have been occupied.

It’s been 43 years since Israel’s government banned The Beatles from playing there amid fears the band would corrupt young fans. But earlier this year, Ron Prosor, Israel’s ambassador to the UK, visited Liverpool and apologised to the band.

The security’s been beefed up to keep the ex-Beatles’ safety as priority, and we hope that the show is a success.

At the Church of the Nativity in Manger Square, Sir Paul lit a candle said: “This candle is for peace for all people all around the world, especially in Israel and Palestine.”

Best Buy buys Napster for $121 million

Electronics retailer Best Buy is acquiring the Napster music service–its ticket into the booming online-music sector.

The two companies on Monday announced a merger deal in which Best Buy is to launch an all-cash tender offer for outstanding Napster shares at $2.65 apiece, with the full acquisition valued at $121 million. That total value represents $54 million net of approximately $67 million in cash and short-term investments in Napster as of June 30.

Best Buy has seen the potential in the pioneer of digital music.  Now with a subscription service instead of illegal downloads, Napster’s holding strong to 700,000 subscribers.

Best Buy plans to use both Napster’s technological capabilities and its subscriber base to reach consumers looking to explore digital music and other forms of entertainment “beyond music subscriptions” over a variety of electronic devices.

Everyone wants a piece of the digital-music pie.  Apple’s iTunes has been holding power over others like Amazon MP3.  What makes the competition heavier is the re-invention of Myspace Music and the rumors that Facebook is going to get in on the action as well.

Napster’s got 40 employees, and CEO Chris Gorog and other senior managers have signed deals that will keep them with the company after the merger.  For its fiscal 2008, which ended in March, it reported a loss of $16.5 million on revenue of $127.5 million.

Apple unveils funnest iPod ever: includes speakers, Nike+

Today kicked off Apple’s “Let’s Rock” event and boy did it rock.  They’ve just unveiled three new iPod touch models that are hitting stores today. They’re priced more competitively at $229 for the 8GB, $299 for the 16GB, and $399 for the 32GB, saving you about $50 off of each version.

They’re a bit thinner and the backs are similar to that of the iPhone 3G.  There will be built-in speakers, but no mic.  That’s not a major issue, because they will work with new Apple headphones that have a microphone on the cord (sold separately for $79).

All of the new models will come with 2.1 firmware, which is releasing soon for anyone who has the current-model iPod Touch.  Nike+ is built in, so you just have to buy the transmitter or sensor and you are all set to go!

Oh, and did we mention the new models are more eco-friendly?  Yep, they’re constructed with arsenic-free glass and highly-recyclable components.  Now, we definitely have to get one.

The Concept: Holeder Earphones by Yoonsang Kim

Does it appeal to you?  A unique design concept that screams for your attention.  Yoonsang Kim has designed the Holeder earphones that are as functional as they are elegant.  They’re able to loop together around your neck (see gallery below) when not in use, or just fit snug in your ear when you’re listening to your tunes.  What’s more appealing about these earphones is that somehow, they’re able to prevent bacterial growth.

The unfortunate part is that they’re still just a pair of concept earphones.  The question is:  If they were on the market, would you buy them?
