Billboard Takeover Invades Williamsburg

Billboard Takeover in Williamsburg

The Takeover of Billboards in NYC has crossed the Brooklyn Bridge into Williamsburg. Along Bedford Avenue,  Jordan Seiler of Public Ad Campaign spotted a couple billboards painted over by RAB. ANIMAL tells us that while one of the ads was an illegal NPA billboard, the other is just a handpainted Colosal Media spot for the unpopular “Flydealists Unite” campaign.

New York Street Advertising Takeover: Art to NYC’s illegal billboards

The “New York Street Advertising Takeover” by Jordan Seiler went live on Saturday, when over 120 illegal billboards were white washed by dozens of volunteers throughout the city.

The project was organized as a reaction to the hundreds of billboards that are not registered with the city, and therefore are illegal. While illegal, these violations are not being prosecuted by the City of New York, allowing the billboard companies to garner huge profits by cluttering our outdoor space with intrusive and ugly ads.

After the illegal spots were white washed, late in the day yesterday over eighty artists transformed these spaces into personal pieces of art.
