The rumors were swirling around for the last week or so but now it’s official: Yahoo has bought tumblr for $1.1 Billion in hard cold cash. Marissa Mayer and team were not playing around, folks. They just turned things up and made David Karp one wealthy 26 year old in the process. Here’s what Yahoo had to say in a press release:
Per the agreement and our promise not to screw it up, Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business. David Karp will remain CEO. The product, service and brand will continue to be defined and developed separately with the same Tumblr irreverence, wit, and commitment to empower creators.
Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer took to Yahoo’s tumblr page to make the announcement and appropriately so. She even tossed in a gif for good measures. The numbers for Tumblr are impressive — 300 million monthly unique visitors and 120,000 signups every single day with a blog post pool of over 50 billion.

In some very surprising news, Nick Wooster has joined J.C. Penney as their new Creative Director. Since leaving his post as Creative Director at the Neiman Marcus Group a year ago, Nick’s been credited for doing some consulting work for both Thom Browne as well as the Gilt Groupe. He’s crafted some impeccable showings at the PROJECT Tradeshow in Vegas the past two seasons and even took a trip out to Japan to support the latest PROJECT Wooster showings. Beyond this, Nick’s collaborated directly with a few brands on some product over the past few months including Happy Socks and Leffot.
When a brand looks to revamp their entire image, it’s going to have to start with leadership. Nick joins a slew of new hires including a few former Apple execs so he’s definitely in good company. There just couldn’t have been a better time to come in as the new Creative Director than now and we wish Woost God nothing but the best.

Five years ago Monocle hit the newsstands. Today it’s at the heart of a very modern media company – but also one with some old-school values. The publication has evolved from having nineteen employees to over seventy now and representation in over 100 countries. The type of work they do ranges from print to video to radio. Yes, radio. Monocle also launched a television series on Bloomberg TV. Their reach is far and wide and the content is as rich and newsworthy in its 51st issues as it was back in issue 2007 when issue No. 1 hit newsstands. Here is a film that chronicles the first five years.

Japanese mega-retailer Uniqlo has inked a deal with UNDERCOVER to begin collaborating on a clothing line set to release in Spring 2012 with the launch of a flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo. For those not familiar, Undercover was first started back in 1989 by Mr. Jun Takahashi while he was a student at Bunka Fashion College. The brand’s gained a massive following over the year, in Japan and internationally.
Details are slim on the collaboration thus far but we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

All good things must come to an end, folks and that is the only thing that explains news stating Uniqlo and Jil Sander’s +J collection will end its course after the Fall/Winter 2011 season. Sander’s minimalistic approach to design went mass market just two years ago at extremely accessible price points and we hope Uniqlo is able to craft more partnerships in the near future.
