Park & Bond for Movember

Park & Bond for Movember

The other night, we had the chance to stop in for Park & Bond’s Movember event at the Blind Barber here in NYC. For those not familiar, Movember is annual event that looks to change the face of men’s health. During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. With their Mo’s, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. Where do you come in? You support their efforts by donating and joining in on the movement as well. This way, the support grows as does the conversation around men’s health and specific cancers that affect us. A long list of gentlemen from Park & Bond’s team have joined Movember, and we were there on November 1st to witness a few guys known for their beards hop in the barber’s chair and wipe it all off.

To donate to Park & Bond’s team, head on over to mobro.co/parkandbond and get in on the conversation.

Jolie-Pitt foundation donates $2m to Global Health Committee in Ethiopia

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are donating $2 million to a clinic in Ethiopia, the birthplace of their 3-year old daughter, Zahara.  The Global Health Committee will use the money to build a centre in the capital city of Addis Ababa to fight HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.

The centre will be named Zahara. The World Health Organization estimates that the African nation has 1.7 million people infected with HIV and 6,000 people infected with drug-resistant tuberculosis. “It is our hope when Zahara is older she will take responsibility of the clinic and continue its mission,” Pitt, 44, said in a statement.

In Cambodia, where their oldest son Maddox was born, the couple’s opened the Maddox Chivan Children’s Centre, where the centre has provided medical treatment, education and social services to children affected by HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis since February of 2006.

“Our goal is to transfer the success we have had in Cambodia to Ethiopia, where people are needlessly dying of tuberculosis, a curable disease, and HIV/AIDS, a treatable disease,” Jolie, 33, said in a statement.

They Need Us: Haiti Storm Relief Fund

In response to the devastation Haiti has faced the past few weeks because of storms, Wyclef Jean has announced the Haiti Storm Relief Fund through his Yelé Haiti organization and in coordination with the Pan American Development Foundation and the World Food Program.

Yelé Haiti is hoping to “provide food, water and other essentials to those organizations that are helping to stabilize the lives of more than 600,000 people who were cut off from food supplies and displaced by the storms that have battered the country over the past few weeks,” according to a press release. The fund also will provide tents, blankets, medical supplies, hygiene kits and money to the non-profits responding to the emergency.

The Yele Haiti movement, founded by Jean to give hope to Haitians in need, already has sponsored food, supplies and water to assist victims in Southeastern Haiti. The organization plans to ship additional containers with emergency supplies into the country over the next few weeks.

Jean, who is a Haitian Goodwill Ambassador, along with Haitian President Rene Preval, have made a public appeal for help from the international community. “My country is facing a serious catastrophe at the moment,” Jean said in a statement. “And we urgently require assistance.”

The problem’s beyond short-term relief to its people.  With the diminished tree coverage, the country will always be susceptible to mudslides and flash floods from storms and hurricanes.

If you are able to help in anyway, head over to yele.org.

Google helping to bring internet to 3 billion people in developing markets like Africa

Today, Google and their partners like HSBC gave $60 million to help place an order for 16 low-orbit Thales Alenia satellites to help improve the infrastructure of developing markets such as Africa.  3 billion people in the world are without internet access, and Google and their partners hope to deliver it to them.  A total of $150-$180m is required by O3B networks (other 3 billion) to establish the satellites.  O3B is the company that will be launching the satellites and managing the initiative.

The company also has plans to convert mobile phone towers into multipurpose high-speed network nodes, which when complete is estimated to cost $750m all told. Google says it will help drop the price of broadband by up to 95% in some places where it’s a rare commodity.

The satellites won’t be launching until 2010, so look for news to break about the companies dishing out the remaining $100m + to launch the satellites from now ’til then.
