HODINKEE is currently taking over Basel World and they’ve just dropped first live shots of the Rolex Sky-Dweller. From a distance, the Sky-Dweller looks likea Day-date but get a bit closer and you’ll see a second timezone via an inner rotating disc as well as an annual calendar. The annual calendar display the month with an inconspicuous aperture above the associated hour, while the date is displayed as you’d expect under the trademark Rolex cyclops window. Keep an eye on HODINKEE as they’re sure to deliver some more news on the Sky-Dweller soon.

Our good friend Ben of HODINKEE.com is launching vintage leather straps for the masses. They’re designed as an accessory to your vintage Rolex Submariner and are made in Italy. Hodinkee straps will come in a wide range of colors and finishes and are a solid alternative to bulkier NATO straps. Don’t pull out your wallet just yet as they’re still in production. Expect them to be ready for purchase in 3-4 weeks and available exclusively at HODINKEE.com with a select few hitting Freemans Sporting Club as well.

Word is out that Tiger Woods will become a Rolex Ambassador come January 2012. Rolex has complete confidence in Tiger and feel he still has a long career ahead of him and that he has all the qualities required to continue to mark the history of golf. This comes just a few months after Tag Heuer dropped their endorsement.
This association pays tribute to the exceptional stature of Tiger Woods and the leading role he plays in forging the sport’s global appeal. It also constitutes a joint commitment to the future.
Rolex’s fruitful relationship with golf stretches back to the 1960s when the brand supported the “Big Three” — Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. Tiger will join the fraternity of ambassadors for Rolex on January 1, 2012.

Rolex’s HTE series of watches adds two more pieces to close out the collection. The 39mm and 42mm celebrate the achievements of the children of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, two famed explorers known to be the first to reach the summit of Mt. Everest back in 1953. The 39mm congratulates Sir Edmund and his son Peter as the first father and son duo to reach the summit while the 42mm sheds light on Peter and Jamling Tenzing Norgay summiting Everest. Select HTE buyers will also get a once in a lifetime opportunity to join Peter Hillary and Jamling Tenzing Norgay on their expedition to Everest Basecamp in May 2012. Big shoes to fill but we’re hoping they succeed in moving their fathers’ legacies forward.

At Noon EST today, GiltMAN will be launching another watch sale curated by Benjamin Clymer of Hodinkee. Apparently, vintage Rolexes are what the people want so who is Ben to deny the people? This sale’s got 70 vintage Rolex watches on colorful NATO and canvas straps instead of the conventional steel Oyster bracelets or leather ensembles. All watches are priced under $4,000, making this sale even more enticing.

The fine folks at Hodinkee turn us to a duo of customized Rollies from Project X Designs. Say what you will about aftermarket Rolex customization but these two will seldom go unnoticed. The good folks over at Hodinkee are celebrating their second birthday but don’t think it’s all fun and no work right now. They’re still delivering some great news atop a handful of giveaways. They recently turned us to this custom timepiece from Project X Designs based on the Rolex Explorer II. Since Rolex themselves have yet to unveil an Orange Hand Explorer, these guys took it upon themselves to deliver. “The Explorer II has been coated in DLC to give in the “blackout” look. Then, Project X has filled the 24-hour scale on the bezel with bright orange paint. Finally, and clearly most importantly, the red GMT hand has been replaced with an orange one.”
Project X will have a limited run of only 24 pieces available but no word on pricing yet.

Being an avid reader of Hodinkee.com, I’ve come across some fine timepieces thanks to Ben and Co. This vintage Paul Newman Daytona Rolex that they got their hands on recently is nothing short of magnificent. Now, put that beauty inside Mercedes’ new AMG SLS Gullwing and you got yourself one hell of a combo. The crew got a chance to push the 563 horsepower beast around the famous Laguna Seca Raceway while sporting the vintage timepiece. The video’s after the jump, but be warned, it may cause excessive drooling. You’ve been warned. (more…)
