For a company that was established back in 1850, Marvin Watch Co. is certainly experiencing a rebirth at the present moment which combines the Swiss watchmaker’s longstanding heritage with some new school tactics. Jerome Pineau, Marvin’s International Community Manager, has utilized social media and some outstanding customer service to deliver the brand’s timeless products. We personally had the opportunity to check out the M108, an automatic movement beauty that’s self winding and offers a power reserve of 38 hours.
While running through Marvin’s extensive lineup of timepieces, the M108 in a charcoal finish was the one to immediately standout. It draws much inspiration from earlier classic styles (hence the ORIGIN Series label) and also happens to be the only automatic movement piece with a rubber bracelet. The all-black design really is unique and the overall aesthete delivers a balance between elegance and sportiness. What’s more interesting is the attention to detail the Marvin team puts into delivering this specific watch series. All M108s are fitted with butterfly clasps and the rubber bracelets actually have to be cut to fit before they’re sent off to their new owner which means you better keep your wrist size handy. All M108s have open window case back, which is not something new, but it’s still wonderful seeing the Swiss Sellita SW200 movement work its magic on demand. (more…)

The good folks over at Hodinkee are celebrating their second birthday but don’t think it’s all fun and no work right now. They’re still delivering some great news atop a handful of giveaways. They recently turned us to this custom timepiece from Project X Designs based on the Rolex Explorer II. Since Rolex themselves have yet to unveil an Orange Hand Explorer, these guys took it upon themselves to deliver. “The Explorer II has been coated in DLC to give in the “blackout” look. Then, Project X has filled the 24-hour scale on the bezel with bright orange paint. Finally, and clearly most importantly, the red GMT hand has been replaced with an orange one.”
Project X will have a limited run of only 24 pieces available but no word on pricing yet.

This military-inspired watch from Timex was on display at this year’s Basel, and now the good folks at GQ tell us it’s coming to a retailer near you in July. “It has the kind of functionality and affordability you’ve come to expect from a Timex, and it’s got that rugged and classic appeal the military issue watches from decades ago held.” The resin case is a bit wider than the previous model, but also comes with an exchangeable nylon band, and an Indiglo dial for night viewing.

With Baselworld 2010 now in full swing in Switzerland, it’s good to see our good friend Ben from Hodinkee is enjoying himself and dishing out the news in the process. The team turns us to Tudor‘s rejuvenated line of Monte Carlo chronos. “Good movement, Rolex finish, and unbelievably great looks. It is (very) affectionately known as the Poor Man’s Paul Newman Daytona. However, in this case, the poor man is still far more wealthy than most people in the world, as they fetch around $10,000 to this day.” Yikes. Well, the heritage line is set to start at about $3,800 which isn’t so discouraging if these timepieces start making their way to the US.
The pics (after the jump) don’t do the beauties justice but take note of the amenities — rotating bezel and a NATO strap to grab our attention. (more…)

Among all the fine timepieces being unveiled at Baselworld this year, we think this one from Omega is still a standout. The Seamaster Ploprof 1200M Diver watch with white dial and strap gives the iconic Ploprof a new look with all the features you’ve come to expect from Omega. Included amenities include the, “White bi-directional locking bezel with chrome-coated Arabic numerals, an automatic helium escape valve and water resistance to 1200 metres (4000 feet, 120 bar). The watch, with its timeless white bezel and dial, is presented with either a white rubber strap or a brushed mesh ‘Sharkproof’ bracelet… The Ploprof’s case cannot be mistaken for that of any other watch: the screwed-in crown is located at 9 o’clock under a protective buffer. Its unique positioning allows freer wrist movement and prevents any inadvertent manipulation.”

Our friends over at Perpetuelle turn us to this limited edition piece from Ermenegildo Zegna in celebration of their 100th anniversary. Manufactured by Girard-Perregaux, this watch is a, “Perfect representation of my perception of both brands – timeless, luxurious, high quality. Angelo Zegna, the father of the founder Ermenegildo, was a watchmaker by trade. In keeping with Zegna’s Centennial celebration, only 100 pieces will be made. The watch has a rose gold case and is 40mm in diameter, with date, small seconds, and month functions. ”

Watchmaker Bell & Ross has taken its entire collection online for the European market (for now). Selectism explains that, “Rather than offering a small selection online, they have dropped more than 300 models for purchase. CEO Carlos A. Rosillo described the Bell & Ross online boutique as an “important strategic step as part of the brand’s ongoing goal of offering the best service to its clients.”
Look for us to be able to get our hands on the good sometime in 2010.

The “Cartier ID One Concept” watch is a piece of luxurious art. Intended to never undergo any repairing and regulation after it’s been manufactured, the Cartier ID is beautifully housed in a Ballon Bleu case that measures 46mm. It is made of Niobium-Titanium, an alloy that looks great and is highly wear resistant and has its own unique shock absorption properties that are unmatched by other materials like steel. We look forward to seeing this concept become reality in the near future.

The Ozo watch by Russian designer Anton Repponen is an interesting concept. Yes, unfortunately it’s a concept. It’s unique and the black and white color combination makes it sleek and timeless. The hours and minutes are separated into two wheels, with a trapezoid shape in the middle capturing the current time. (via lostinasupermarket)
