Portland’s Finest: Jordan Sayler of Winn Perry [Four+One]

Jordan Sayler of Winn Perry Interviewed by 4+1 Productions

If you’re ever in the Portland area, atop your list of to-dos has to be a visit to one of our favorite retailers, Winn Perry. The man behind the shop is Jordan Sayler, a young proprietor who’s been changing the way guys dress out in the Midwest. The stock is what you’d find at any of the distinguished New York-based shops we’ve turned you to in the past, and we’re led to believe the level of success is the same as well.

This interview crafted by Four + One Productions, gives people who may be interested a bit more introspective look at what it is that makes Jordan tick. Great work by director Jacob Hinmon and photographer Kelly James.

Alden x Winn Perry Footwear [Part III]

Alden x Winn Perry Footwear [Part III]

Another exclusive from Portland-based Winn Perry alongside shoemaker Alden. Like the Navy Blucher High Boot, this boot has been slightly enhanced with key adjustments to keep you sealed from heavy rains, like those in Portland. This boot features Alden’s “Double Waterloc” oiled leather sole. “Offering the beauty of a leather sole with the added functionality of water resistance to dramatically increase the life of your soles on soggy ground. Add to that a hard rubber heel for traction and stability and you won’t have to worry about slipping on that spilled beer on the concrete floor at the pub anymore.”

Alden for Winn Perry Navy Blucher High Boot

Alden for Winn Perry Navy Blucher High Boot

Alden continues to bless Portland shop Winn Perry with another exclusive. The Navy Blucher High Boot is filled with inspiration from “Pershing” Trench Boots, also known to as “Little Tanks.” Here’s more insight:

When the Pershing Boots were received in 1918, the soldiers of the U.S. 1st Division rubbed them with a treatment, which consisted of 2 parts beef tallow (beef fat basically) to 1 part Neatsfoot oil. This experiment, referred to as “dubbing”, was supposed to make the boots more waterproof and gave them a darker, oiled appearance. For our “Little Tanks”, we made them to Alden New England standards with a heavily oiled reverse chamois leather and Alden’s plantation crepe sole with leather tip. This combination certainly makes them pretty weather proof and quite a bit more comfortable than the originals, which had a triple leather sole with iron toe cleats, heal plates and hobnails, a few of the reasons they were referred to as Little Tanks. While not built for fighting in the trenches, these boots will still be very happy taking some abuse.

They’re really special, as 99.9% of Alden-made pieces are, no? They look great, and with Alden’s reputation of crafting wearable footwear with a deep attention to detail, we don’t think we’ll be able to pass this pair up. They’re available now at Winn Perry for $420 USD. For a closer look, click the jump.  (more…)

Alden Longwings for Winn Perry

Alden Longwings for Winn Perry

It’s definitely the fine details that make all the difference, and Winn Perry proves this with their rendition of a pair of Alden Longwings. The difference is slight, with the only alteration being in the sole to combat Portland’s famously rainy climate. “Done simply in walnut brown calfskin, this shoe is about as under the radar as beautifully constructed shoes come. But if ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So we only made one very subtle change that will benefit us Portland folk immensely. The main difference made to these was in the sole. Instead of the standard double leather sole, we used an oiled version, called a ‘Double Waterloc’ that will resist the harmful effects of Portland’s wet climate. The heavily oiled sole is a stacked version of the soles used in the construction of Alden’s flex welt system. In this case however, the oil keeps water from penetrating the sole and helps to increase their lifespan dramatically on Portland’s soggy grounds.”

With the weather being as dirty as its been in NYC the last few days (yes, finally the sun today!), maybe you should grab a pair of these to be prepared for the next onslaught of showers.
